Self-Love Fest

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you…well, except for that guy who broke up with me via text message a couple of weeks back. But hey, thanks to him I can definitively say I don’t want to date guys who think that is an acceptable way to behave, ha! Anyway, this Valentine’s Day despite my single status, I’m having a really fun time celebrating all of the little, weird (but in a good way) things that make me uniquely…Me.

So, of course, today I want to love on my family and friends and let them know how much they mean to me. Today does not have to be about romantic love…love is love y’all. Just ask Lin Manuel. However, there’s that old adage that you can’t love someone else unless you love yourself first. I think someone fancy said that OR I read it on a pillow at Home Goods. Either way, life-changing stuff am I right?

I think that one of the greatest things about getting older is having a stronger sense of who we are and not flinching or wavering. Who we are got us this far in life, why look back now? One thing I do not think is great is the whole ‘you can’t drink like you used’. My taste was pretty poor in college and I’d like to trade that drinkability for now when I’m sipping on a yummy Malbec and regretting it in the a.m. Instead, I wasted it on things like Keystone Ice and yes, Beast. But, as per usual, I have digressed and this is not why I’m here with you today.

So, whether you’re in a relationship or not, I think today is the perfect day to love on your cute little self. Sure, every day is a good day but there’s no time like the present! Let’s embrace who we are and LOVE ourselves

Here’s where we’re going to stray from the typical “Love yourself post” we’re not doing the whole “I’m a good friend” thing. EVERYONE thinks they are a good friend. It’s like my favorite line from When Harry Met Sally:

Ok, not all of us have a sense of humor or have good taste but we have something; now I’m funny AND I have good taste, so I’m just like one of the lucky ones you know? 😛 Ha, but for real when I think about what I love most about myself I immediately think about how good I am at getting gifts for my friends and family. My favorite may be the framed Scrabble board I got my parents for their 35th wedding anniversary. I will not apologize for this skill becuase you will most likely benefit from it!

I also absolutely LOVE, and I mean like LOVE, researching a restaurant menu ahead of time. Even after all of this research I won’t even order a meal but like an appetizer/salad combo instead or maybe even two appetizers. I don’t know what it is but it’s one of my favorite ways to dine out!

Another thing I absolutely LOVE to do is sing. And I don’t mean like kind of sing along to the radio. I mean, full out perform a song. As a kid, I wanted to be on the Mickey Mouse Club so badly! Christina Aguilera lived down the street from me and her sister was on my bus route and I thought that by proxy getting on the show would be pretty easy because we were from the same town. That is NOT how it works, turns out.

I love nothing more than a full song/dance breakout in my room in the morning before getting ready for work, or the true American Idol-esque performance I provide to the other commuters on I4 here in Orlando. I even do choreo yo! I will never apologize for this aspect of my personality and in fact if you’re in the car with me, I will expect you to perform back up!

Lately, what I’m LOVING is the confidence I’m feeling at work. It took some time since starting this new gig but you know that feeling when things click! It happened a few weeks ago, and while I’m still so very new at this software development life I realized I knew who to go to for certain answers, how to handle specific partners and when to prioritize specific tasks. It was a good feeling and it’s getting better every day…and that’s just another aspect to love about me: my confidence at work!

Take some time today in between loving on others and make sure to take stock of what you love about you.
