This morning at Ace Hardware (Yes, I was in a hardware store!) the woman ringing me up was signing me up for their reward club and asked me what month I was born in. Truthfully, this is one rewards program I won’t be reaping many benefits of but thought sure why not and let her know that I was born in March. Another cashier chimed in that it was her birthday month and they rang me up and I was on my way. In the car, I heard the One Direction song “The Story of My Life” and got to thinking that birthdays are just like New Year’s Eve, we begin to reflect back on who we are, what we want in the next year and the story of our lives.
I could write for days about who I was growing up and the different situations I went through that shaped who I am as a woman, a friend andΒ as an adult. Oh, and they’re super good stories too but that’ll be for another blog. I could show you photos, almost like going through my baby books, and tell you that my first word was “No” and it wouldn’t take a someone with a Ph.D. to realize it’s because I heard that word more than others.
No, I thought to kick off the month of March I would take you through a number of songs that have been there for me at one point or another in my life. Songs that immediately put a smile on my face, songs that remind me of some of my favorite memories and even songs that got me through rough times.
I won’t tell you which ones they are and what they mean to me, but just know (in random order):
One song got me through my first heartbreak
One is my go-to driving with the windows down and sing-out-loud song
One song taught me to love a new genre of music and truly made my cry upon hearing it for the first time
One song told me I was making the right choice by going into Journalism
One reminds me of hot summers on Long Island with my cousins
Another song got me through my internship at VH1 and makes me miss my Aunt Pam every time I hear it
One song is the very first song I ever learned to play on the piano
One is the song my Dad and I would dance around the house to when I was little
One song was our Friday night anthem in college
One was my ‘I’m doing homework’ song in high school
One song helped me through the loss of family members and in fact, inspired my first tattoo
One song is just my all-time favorite song
I’ll let you listen and leave a note in the comments and tell me which song you think is which and don’t forget to tell me YOUR favorite song!
