If you have followed any of my Instagram Stories over the past week and a half you may have gleaned that I was headed to Puerto Rico for Memorial Day Weekend. My cousin, Nicole, and her husband own a super yummy and fun restaurant, Shipwreck Bar & Grill as well as the dive shop next door, Taino Divers in Rincon, Puerto Rico. My roommate and I were joining my parents and heading down for fun, LOTS of sun and a surprise 40th birthday party for my cousin John. However, JetBlue had other plans.
With a Thursday evening departure time of 10 p.m., we hung out at one of the restaurants in terminal A at the Orlando International Airport to kill time when the first of many emails came in from JetBlue. Our flight was delayed, but only a mere 40 minutes. While this sucked, I did what I always do: Got a Starbucks.
We settled in to four seats at Gate 3 and waited for our flight, when yet again…another email came our way. JetBlue was delaying our flight to 12:30 a.m. From there, the emails seemed to be nonstop. What was originally a 10 p.m. flight soon became a 2:30 a.m. flight. My original plans for 2:30 a.m. were to be nestled into my bed in our beachside condo in Puerto Rico, hours away from waking up to the most amazing sunrises you’ve ever seen on the Caribbean Sea.
My poor roommate was not doing so hot as she had been up since 3 a.m. working a Press Event and was on the struggle bus, but was putting her best face forward every time I alerted her of our new, later departure time. Things started to look up when we got a notification that our now 2:30 a.m. flight would take off at 2 a.m.! Cheers throughout Gate 3!
However, 2 a.m. came and went with a quick update from the gate agent that our plane was in the hanger and my gut instinct started to kick in–we weren’t going to Puerto Rico. When I watched the Pilots walk away from our gate, that is when I knew. I immediately jumped out of my seat, grabbed my dad and my phone and we ran over to get in line. That’s when we got the dreaded email: Flight CANCELED.
Guys, I wanted to throw up. I had flights delayed and I’ve had flights canceled, but I’ve never had this kind of back and forth torture. After another hour waiting in line and on the phone with JetBlue, we got the word: There were no flights out of any city in Florida for another TWO DAYS. That’s right, our vacation was slipping away from us and slowly turning into the worst Stay-Cay ever.
After some colorful words, which my parents agreed with, we dragged ourselves and our luggage to our cars and said our goodbyes. Our 8ish hours hanging out in the airport had come to a close and we all just wanted to go home and go to bed. My parents made the 2.5-hour journey back to St. Augustine, after a quick trip to Ormond Beach. Damnit if my father wasn’t going to see a sunrise over the water at one point. Amie and I drove back to our apartment laughing through our tears; we couldn’t believe this was happening to us. What did happen over the next few days were Snapchats, Instagrams and photos by the pool and more with our new favorite saying: #NotPuertoRico.
As my stay-cay comes to an end, I’m not gorgeously tan the way I was hoping to. I have not partied with my cousins on the beach and I most certainly did not achieve the perfect beachy-waves I was looking forward to. However, whenever I’m feeling sad I always have a go to…music.
So, welcome to my latest My Revamped Playlist: #NotPuertoRico. Just a few songs I have been belting out to in the car or listening to at the pool to get me through my vacation heartbreak. Enjoy, turn up the music and if you have a chance, shoot JetBlue a tweet and tell them they broke my little heart.
