I have done a lot of writing and blog prep lately and one of the things I do when I’m writing, or hanging out in my room, is pull out my latest purchase: an adorable in an it matches the room kind of way record player. I have wanted one for a while and when I asked my musical-obsessed father and brother they jumped into action talking about all that I needed: Good speakers, easy to replace needles and more. I didn’t want to make this a massive investment so I found one that was portable and like I said, adorable. I found it on Amazon.com and of course the fact that it was Prime made it an even better investment–free two day shipping!
One of the best parts about a record player is going to vintage stores and finding really amazing records to add to your collection. It’s a music lovers hobby and I have dreamed of being this kind of person for so long that I get giddy when I use my record player. Oh, and because there is such a resurgence in record players and records, you can even find today’s latest hits on vinyl. Some of them even sound better, such as Leon Bridges. His album, Coming Home, is the reason you should be buying vinyl in 2017.
My go-to style of music to listen to on vinyl is jazz. It may be an unpopular genre with the ‘youngins’, but I have annoyed my parents since I was a kid demanding to listen to old school jazz, big band, swing or anything from the 40s. If reincarnation is a thing, I just may be an extra from The Great Gatsby! Anyway, I think anyone can and should give this genre of music a go (to my friend Maggie: this is not for you…I know I will never convert you, though this is my life’s mission!).
However, I wanted to share with you some of my favorites that you can put on in the background, shake up a dirty martini (blue cheese stuffed olives of course) and get some writing done. Think the movie “Midnight in Paris” but in your bedroom! Or maybe you need a really chill playlist for a summer backyard dinner, these songs won’t distract you but will pair perfectly with a string of Edison lights and a chilled bottle of rosé. I think this playlist is screaming for a cheese plate and a red wine, don’t you?
Take a listen and let me know your thoughts…are you a jazz fan? What’s your go-to music for a chill night in or when you’re doing work? Happy listening, loves!

This is perfect because I’m on the hunt for new music and one of the genres I want to try out is jazz! I’m a huge fan of the saxophone so I think it could be my cup of tea.
