Since muting my Instagram on June 1 to let our sisters and brothers of color have the floor I have spent a lot of time reading articles regarding racism, listening to podcasts about white privilege, and thinking about the space I take up on the internet. Have I been using it to the best of my ability and is there more that I can do? The answers are simple: No and Yes. I have not showcased enough diversity on my blog. I want to be a blog that empowers ALL women; the time to change is now!
I started this blog out a few years ago as an outlet for my voice and out of necessity. I needed to write again after so many years removed from my college journalism days and I felt like I had something to say. However, I wasn’t sure what it was. There were a few stumbles; is this a beauty blog? A blog about my Spotify playlists? A place for my anger towards The Nanny not being available for my streaming pleasure?
What I landed on was a ‘lifestyle blog that means business’ because I am so much more than my 9-5. Don’t get me wrong, it is a huge part of who I am. I want to provide career advice to those just entering the workforce or peers my age looking to pivot and find a new path. I also wanted this to be a place to shine a light on some amazing women (and men!) who are bringing their talents to their field and kicking it like a boss. And sure, I will continue to throw in a playlist here or there or a little lifestyle tip. However, I haven’t been diligent about showcasing all women and men of color, with diverse backgrounds and stories that must be heard.
To do a piece for my ‘She’s A Boss‘ series I want to personally interview someone. I like an in-person/on the phone interview to get those juicy tidbits and thought the profiles would be worse without them. I’ll admit, it’s hard to track down a stranger on the internet and get them to say yes! But why should that stop me from telling YOU about these amazing women?
With that being said I want to apologize for not embracing enough diversity on my page because I was too nervous to go for the ask. It can be a bit scary sliding into someone’s DMs or reaching out via email to see if we could set up a quick call. Let me tell you, there are emails floating in the internet ether unanswered! My being scared led me to fail on being a woman who supports ALL women.
I have some wonderful friends in my life who have seen the discrepancy on my site and have offered to be that bridge to women of color who they think would be faboo women to share with you. I am taking them up on the offer. It’s only fair to you, to these women and all women to be a blog that embraces diversity. Everyone has a story to share, and I look forward to sharing those stories with you.
I appreciate the time you spend when you are here at my little corner of the internet and I will commit to being a better blogger, friend, and ally to all women!
