John Krasinski has currently been taking on the task of what we like to call “The Lord’s Work” with his weekly YouTube show Some Good News. He has been shinning a much-needed light on the amazing work that our Health Care teams are doing all across the country right now, sharing how people are making do without their favorite sports on TV and recently held a prom for the high school students.
This week, however, the man who finds a way to make me ugly cry for ten-minutes straight did it again. He held one of the most amazing online graduations and had commencement speakers just like a normal graduation ceremony. I mean you had Oprah, Steven Speilberg and freaking MALALA at your graduation right? Yah, me neither…I highly recommend you watch this week’s episode, later after you’ve read this of course, and see for yourself the powerful words of wisdom and advice they dolled out.
These kids, ready to either tackle college in the fall or start applying for jobs and hit up the real world were so inspiring and had me reminiscing about the youthful optimism that I had when I was graduating high school and heading off to Penn State. “What should I major in? I know I want to be both an MTV VJ and somehow also work for Walt Disney World…I can manage that. I’ll probably meet my future husband in my sophomore year so I’ll need to prep for that, too. I’m sure I’ll stay in touch with ALL of my friends from high school…” You know, those beautiful, optimistic thoughts we all have at 18.
But what takes me back a youth filled with summer nights at the local parks, car rides around town singing at the top of our lungs playing Padiddle, and shopping the mall are the songs from this time of the early Millenium. Pop music was at its height, I was starting to explore and love a more folky side of music, and summers were planned around Dave Matthew’s concerts and mini-golf dates.
So, enjoy my latest My Revamped Playlist, one that for sure would have been full of songs I illegally downloaded off of Napster, burned on to a CD and a made a nerdy CD cover for and passed out to ALL of my friends and called it something like “Summer ’02 mix” ha! And to all of those who are graduating this spring…congrats!
